Botanical Name:  Syzygium aromaticum

Common Name (s):  Clove Tree, Zanzibar Redhead, Tropical Myrtle

Family:  Myrtaceae

Type:  Broadleaf, evergreen tree; spice, pharmaceutical and agricultural uses

Bloom:  Summer

Flower Color(s):  Pink and red; followed by fruit that contain one seed (red to black/purple when ripened); not used for any purpose

Sun Exposure:  Full sun to part shade

Plant Hardiness Zones:  11 to 12 (will have to be grown in a greenhouse in cooler locations because of a consistent need for high heat and humidity)

Plant Height and Spacing:  15 to 30 feet; 10 to 20 feet

Planting Requirements:  Prefers well-worked, well- draining, moist and loamy/silty soil

Special Note (s): Commercially, the flower buds are dried and used as a spice; the leaves and flower buds are pressed, and the oil is distilled to utilize in pharmaceuticals and agriculturally as a natural pesticide.
