Catnip | A Garden’s Friend and Foe
Catnip (Nepeta cataria) is an herb which is regularly grown in most home gardens for its medicinal and ornamental qualities. The medicinal properties of catnip include its ability to help reduce stress and anxiety in the form of a soothing teas made from dried tops and leaves. Catnip can also help with arthritis, menstrual pain, headaches, gout, sprains, hemorrhoids, eating disorders and an occasional upset stomach. Fresh tops are added to oils to create infused oils and used topically in extracts, tinctures and salves. Dried leaves and tops can be placed in sachets and tinctures and also smoked to relieve certain respiratory problems and to create a euphoric feeling.
Catnip is used commercially in mosquito repellents. Other garden pests such as Japanese beetles, deer, aphids, weevils and squash bugs are also deterred by catnip. Cats on the other hand, find catnip irresistible.
