Agrimony (Agrimonia eupatoria) is a well-known perennial and herbaceous plant originating from Europe and North Africa (it has since naturalized in most places throughout North America). Agrimonia is also known as liverwort, stickwort and church steeples and is a member of the Rosaceae family. Most notably, this flowering plant has a very long history surrounding medieval folklore (magical properties) and medicinal uses. Teas, topical ointments, herbal bath and infusions customarily created from the leaves, flowers and stems of agrimony to help treat a variety of ailments.

Agrimony largely grows in open fields, stream beds, between shrubbery, roadsides and ditches but can certainly be included in a home apothecary, meadow, container or perennial garden landscape. They are hardy to USDA Planting Zones 6 through 9. Agrimony can reach a height of 2 to 4 feet and a spread of 12 inches and blooms during the summer months. The plant produces fragrant yellow flowers from long hairy stalks that attract various pollinators especially bees and butterflies.

Agrimony requires full sun but can also handle a bit of part shade. Well-draining, neutral/average/dry soil with a pH of between 6.0 and 7.0. Once the plants are established, only water when the soil is completely dry. Agrimony can be easily grown from seed (if sowed from seed; plant maturity: 90-120 days) or root propagation. Agrimony is susceptible to root rot, powdery mildew, aphid and scale damage.
