In our fast-moving world, staying informed about food issues and making the best choices can be complicated. Here are seven of the best no-cost apps we think no health-minded and environmentally-conscious foodie should be without:

Finding farmers markets near you is a snap with Farmstand, an iPhone and mobile Web app (accessible from any smartphone or computer) that lets you track down public marketplaces in the U.S., Canada, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand and connect with fellow shoppers in your area.
Dine out guilt-free with the Food Community app, which allows you to seek out locally grown, organic, vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and kosher restaurants and to meet others who share your dietary preferences.
Get the low-down healthy restaurants using Clean Plates, an iPhone app and searchable online database of eateries for carnivores, vegetarians, vegans, gluten-sensitives and raw foodists, complete with insightful professional reviews and suggestions.
Love to eat local? Use Locavore to determine which local foods are in season and where to find them, Plus, you can look up information on area producers and seasonal recipes using farm-fresh ingredients.
Steering clear of genetically modified organisms is difficult but possible. The Non-GMO Project has an iPhone app and downloadable shopping guide (in .PDF for Acrobat Reader) featuring GMO-free brands and products, along with tips on avoiding GMOs and a list of gene-modified crops and ingredients.
If you’re worried about potentially harmful substances, try What’s On My Food?, a useful application that identifies chemicals found on common grocery store foods and offers a 101 course on pesticides.
Make healthy and ocean-friendly choices at stores and restaurants with Seafood Watch’s iPhone and Android apps or online guide, which provide information and recommendations on fishing practices and seafood farming methods.
