Botanical Name: Schisandra chinensis

Common Name (s): Five Flavor Fruit Vine, Chinese Magnolia Vine

Family: Schisandraceae

Type: Perennial vine; berries used medicinally***

Bloom / Flower: Late spring flowers; summer – red berries

Color(s): Yellow, white and red

Sun Exposure:  Part shade (can’t tolerate hot temperatures)

Plant Hardiness Zones: 3-8

Plant Height and Spacing:  20 to 30 feet / 3 to 6 feet

Planting Requirements: Rich, well-draining, slightly acidic soil

Special Note (s): Vines will need sturdy fence, trellis or wall support. A male and female specimen is required for cross pollination. The fruit is called five flavor fruit based on its five tastes: salty, sour, sweet, bitter and pungent.
